We gave it to each other for our birthdays, we waited for it and we finally read it. This is our review of the most important book of the year!
SUMMARY
The title is “I Am Haunted” and in this book Zak explains the reason through the various meanings of the sentence. The dead use him as an empathic channel through which they communicate their messages and feelings, the living consider him both a great inspiration and a mere con man. Anyway, Zak recognizes he’s different, an outsider, he praises this divergence of his but he also feels misunderstood because of it. For this reason, in his second book after “Dark World” he focuses on opening himself as much as possibile, debunking myths, revealing truths and telling some behind the scenes. He begins speaking about his awareness of being destined to live a life full of meaning, his empathy, his heart-felt duty of helping people, up to explaining his carving for knowledge, his need to keep going beyond and analyzing things that most people don’t dare to even think about. He dedicates entire chapters to his big projects like “The Demon House”, “Sympathy Said The Shark” and “Netherworld”, showing us every aspects of their making: the origins, the people he has worked with and the ones whose story he has told; eventually telling us what those experiences meant to him and how they improved him as a man and as an investigator. He writes about health, about the risks - for him and others - caused by the negative energies of the spirits and about the loss of it suffered by some young fans to whom he gave a last reason to smile and fight even though the battle was already lost. He also motivates who wants to become a documentary filmmaker; once again he teaches us to understand how far a spirit or demon can come when it attaches itself to somebody; he warns us about Ouija boards one more time. Dolls are still his most frightful topic to talk about, although crazy fans and haters generously contribute on tormenting him too, but not enough to make him conceal his love for faithful fans. They are his strength, along with his dog Gracie, his family and his friends and co-workers, about whom he speaks very dearly even though he can’t help himself telling some anecdotes about them. But the anecdotes are especially his own, many of them are hilarious, others sad, some even scary. All of them absolutely intense, like him. “I Am Haunted” is Zak in every inch of it, from the cover to the last dot put on page 269.
TOPICS
Materialism: Human being is an individual who is pioneer, inventor and explorer by nature, but, nowadays more than ever, each of his actions extremely depend on a sensation of materialism that Zak doesn’t share. Years of exposure to the spirit world made him realize which are his real priorities beyond it, even if this means becoming bizarre in the eyes of the so-called “normals” for him.
Work: Dedication, precision, diligence, competence, the pursuit of the truth, good memory. These are some of the qualities that characterize the working method of Zak and what he expects from each member of his crew. He explains in detail what being a good investigator means and why he prefers documentary filmmaking to film directing.
Empathy: Being particularly sensitive and empathetic affects someone’s life and work, especially someone like Zak. This enables him to establish deep connections with the spirit world (which leads to the capture of much more relevant evidence) and the people he comes in contact with every day, in his personal life and in the places he investigates.
Destiny: According to Zak, coincidences don’t exist and destiny has always played an important role in his life, because it was the answer to many of his questions, the reason why he is an investigator and why he finds himself investigating unknown places “chosen” by spirits. Also, a dream may hold a much deeper meaning than it seems at first glance, often giving us a sensation of déjà vu, but also certainties and doubts that we don’t believe possible when we are awake.
The other side of the coin: Just as there are serious people out there that are really interested in working with passion like Zak does, paranormal world is full of other individuals (often fake psychic mediums) who take advantage of people using their pain and thirst for responses to make money out of them. Same thing – nobody knows this better than Zak - happens in film setting, in which producers, equipped with the self-confidence that power and money provide, are ready for anything in order to grab and sell a good story of demonic possessions, attaching no importance whatsoever to the truth and the danger behind that story... something Zak does, instead.
Health risks & Co: Rubbing shoulders with the spirit world can cause serious consequences to the health of those who work in this field. Ghosts are able to manipulate the emotions and the physical conditions of a person as much as they like in order to get the power to manifest themselves, even causing strokes and heart attacks. They decide to live through human beings too, whether the latters are aware of it or not. Furthermore, dealing with demons and Satan himself may badly affects mental and physical health, but we must also consider that not everything is negative whenever a godlike power comes into play.
Beyond death: "If you have no positive impact on people and if you don’t do something to help others, you’re not living, you're just waiting for death", this is Zak’s philosophy. Reason why he has never longed for a normal life and job, as he intends to give something more to himself and to the world, instead. He considers his job a mission that only he can accomplish, he hopes to leave a lasting mark in history and gain the true immortality. Others will surely follow his footsteps in the future and will make new discoveries thanks to his researchers and the groundbreaking equipment whose reliability he’s helping to prove.
FRANCINE'S OPINION
In my opinion Zak did an excellent job with this second book of his, making it more personal and enjoyable than the first, “Dark World”. He opened himself to the right point, enough to show us his position on various topics and help us entering his world. His style of writing is professional but nevertheless fluid, suitable for the needs of any kind of reader. It’s a must-have read for those who want to know more about the lead investigator of the GAC, his personal stories, his thoughts about death, life and destiny. By paying attention and opening their minds, the readers have no difficulty whatsoever in comprehending the issue involved, which is not only “Ghost Adventures”, but interesting in-depth examinations of the most technical and spiritual matters of the paranormal. This book makes you ask questions even Zak can’t answer to - so far -, something that, however, doesn’t prevent him to keep pursuing the truth. This is how it must be, as his mind works no-stop and his connection with the spirits is always functional, even in his daily life; this is what he works for, his goal, his calling, his gift, what pushes him into investigating and exploring the afterlife as much as possibile. A world that actually exists, although it’s still not that easy to explain in practical terms. But, after all - as Zak states - the paranormal is a different science that deserves to be recognized and developed to the best of it, isn’t it?
GWEN'S OPINION
I support and paraphrase Francine by saying that, like “Dark World”, “I Am Haunted” is an intriguing read and a unique piece for paranormal enthusiastics, but it’s also extremely more useful for allowing us to know better the man who has written them both. A way of thinking like Zak’s is definitely more comprehensible if Zak himself is examined in depth. And if this is was his purpose, I’d say he succeeded. The reason why he feels misunderstood is clear, but this often happens to such creative, empathetic and special people like he is. The kind of people who see another world beyond our ordinary one, a deeper, full of constant challenges, extraordinarily more interesting world; so much so that its mysteries become tempting in a way that only a few can understand. But Zak not only takes on searching the unknown, he makes a job, an art, a true science of it. He’s so inspired by it that, in turn, he inspires, not only those of his same field, but everyone. Everyone who’s strong, brave, willing enough to follow a dream, to accomplish a mission… without forgetting to rightfully make their own gift and talent available to others. You browse the pages of this half-closed - I’m not saying ‘open’ on purpose! - window onto Zak’s heart without even notice you’re going from amusement to sadness, from astonishment to rage in the course of a bunch of lines. The secret of a good story-teller - and I’ve always thought that he’s so - is to make the readers forget about the flow of time while rubbing in them the strongest points of the issue. And you bet Zak can do that. I certainly recommend this book, both for his contents and for its expository writing, but I also want to warn those who are going to read it in search of Zak’s flaws, because you’ll meet your match… but watch out, you’ll get knocked out in this match.

RIASSUNTO
Il titolo, in italiano, è “Io sono perseguitato” e in questo libro Zak ce ne spiega il motivo attraverso i vari significati della frase. I morti lo utilizzano
come canale empatico tramite cui comunicare i propri messaggi e gli stati d’animo, i vivi lo considerano sia una grande ispirazione che un mero ciarlatano. In qualsiasi caso, Zak riconosce di
essere diverso, fuori dal mondo, elogia questa sua divergenza ma allo stesso tempo essa è anche la causa per cui si sente incompreso. Perciò, nel suo secondo libro dopo “Dark World” si concentra
sull’aprirsi il più possibile, sfatando certi miti, rivelando verità e raccontando alcuni dietro le quinte. Parte parlando della consapevolezza di essere destinato a condurre una vita ricca di
significato, della sua empatia, del sentito dovere di aiutare il prossimo, andando poi ad esprimere la propria sete di conoscenza, l’esigenza di andare sempre oltre, di analizzare e scoprire ciò
che la maggior parte della gente non osa neanche pensare. Dedica interi capitoli a suoi grandi progetti come “The Demon House”, “Sympathy Said The Shark” e “Netherworld”, mostrandocene le varie
sfaccettature nella lavorazione: le loro origini, le persone insieme alle quali ha lavorato e quelle la cui storia ha narrato; infine dicendoci che cosa l’esperienza abbia significato per lui,
per la propria crescita come uomo ed evoluzione come investigatore. Affronta il tema della salute, quella - sua e di tanti altri - a rischio a causa dell’energia negativa degli spiriti e quella
perduta di alcuni giovani fans a cui lui ha donato un motivo per combattere e sorridere malgrado la battaglia fosse già persa. Motiva anche chi sogna di diventare un documentarista; di nuovo ci
insegna a capire fino a che punto uno spirito o demone possa influenzare un essere umano; ci mette ancora una volta in guardia dalle tavole Ouija. Le bambole rimangono il suo argomento più
terrificante da affrontare, nonostante pure i fans fuori di testa e gli haters contribuiscano ampiamente a dargli tormento, ma non abbastanza da spingerlo a tacere il proprio grande amore per i
fedeli ammiratori. Essi sono la sua forza, insieme alla sua cagnolina Gracie, alla sua famiglia e ai suoi amici e colleghi, di cui parla con immenso affetto anche se non resiste a rivelare
aneddoti su di loro. Ma gli aneddoti sono soprattutto suoi, molti divertenti, altri tristi, alcuni anche spaventosi. Tutti assolutamente intensi, come lui. “I Am Haunted” è Zak in tutto e per
tutto, dalla copertina all’ultimo punto messo a pagina 269.
TEMI TRATTATI
Il materialismo: L’essere umano è un individuo che per natura è pioniere, inventore ed esploratore, ma ogni sua azione, ora più che mai, è eccessivamente dipendente da un senso di materialismo che Zak non condivide. Anni di esposizione al mondo degli spiriti gli hanno fatto comprendere quali siano le proprie reali priorità al di là di esso, a costo di rendersi bizzarro agli occhi dei cosiddetti “normali”.
Il lavoro: La dedizione, la precisione, l’impegno, la professionalità, la ricerca della verità, la buona memoria. Queste sono alcune delle qualità che caratterizzano il metodo di lavoro di Zak e ciò che lui pretende da ogni membro del suo team. Spiega in dettaglio cosa vuol dire essere un buon investigatore e per quale motivo preferisce fare il documentarista, piuttosto che il regista di un film.
L'empatia: Essere particolarmente sensibili ed empatici influenza significativamente la vita e il lavoro di una persona, soprattutto una persona come Zak. Ciò lo rende in grado di stabilire profonde connessioni con il mondo degli spiriti (cosa che porta alla cattura di prove molto più rilevanti) e con le persone con le quali viene in contatto ogni giorno, nella vita privata e nei luoghi in cui svolge le sue indagini.
Il destino: Secondo Zak le coincidenze non esistono e il destino ha sempre avuto un ruolo rilevante nella sua vita, poiché esso è stato la risposta a molte sue domande, dal motivo per cui lui è un investigatore al ritrovarsi ad indagare in posti sconosciuti “scelti” dagli spiriti. Un sogno, poi, può racchiudere un significato più profondo di ciò che appare a primo acchito, spesso dandoci la sensazione di déjà vu, ma anche delle certezze e dei dubbi che nella veglia crediamo non possibili.
L’altra faccia della medaglia: Proprio come esistono persone serie e davvero interessate a svolgere il lavoro di Zak con altrettanta passione, il mondo del paranormale è pieno di altri individui (molto spesso i falsi medium) che approfittano del dolore e della sete di risposte delle persone per lucrarci sopra. La stessa cosa - nessuno lo sa bene come Zak - capita nell’ambiente cinematografico, in cui i produttori, muniti della sicurezza che potere e denaro forniscono, sono pronti a tutto pur di accaparrarsi e vendere una buona storia di possessioni demoniache, senza dare alcuna importanza alla verità e al pericolo che stanno dietro a quella storia… cosa che invece Zak fa.
Rischi per la salute & Co: Stare a stretto contatto con il mondo degli spiriti può causare gravi conseguenze sulla salute di chi lavora in questo campo. I fantasmi sono in grado di manipolare le emozioni e le condizioni fisiche di una persona a proprio piacimento pur di manifestarsi, finanche a provocare ictus e infarti. Decidono anche di vivere attraverso un essere umano, che ne sia consapevole o meno. Inoltre, avere a che fare con i demoni e con Satana stesso non può non avere brutti effetti sulla salute mentale e fisica, ma bisogna anche considerare che non tutto è negativo laddove entri in gioco un potere divino.
Oltre la morte: “Se non hai un impatto positivo sulla gente e se non fai qualcosa per aiutare il prossimo, non stai vivendo, stai solo aspettando la morte”, questa è la filosofia di Zak. Ragione per la quale lui non ha mai aspirato una vita e un lavoro normali, intenzionato com’è, invece, a offrire qualcosa di più a se stesso e al mondo. Considera il proprio mestiere una missione che solo lui è in grado di svolgere, spera di lasciare un’impronta importante nella storia e guadagnarsi la vera immortalità. Di sicuro in futuro altri seguiranno le sue orme e faranno nuove scoperte grazie alle sue ricerche e agli strumenti all’avanguardia la cui attendibilità sta contribuendo a dimostrare.
L'OPINIONE DI FRANCINE
A mio parere Zak ha fatto un ottimo lavoro con questo suo secondo libro, rendendolo molto più personale e dilettevole del primo, “Dark World”. Si è aperto al
punto giusto, quel che basta per illustrarci il suo punto di vista riguardo vari argomenti ed aiutandoci ad immergerci nel suo mondo. Il suo stille è professionale, ma tuttavia scorrevole, adatto
alle esigenze di qualsiasi lettore. E’ una lettura che non può mancare a chi vuole conoscere meglio l’investigatore capo della GAC, le sue vicende personali, le sue idee sulla morte, sulla vita,
sul destino. Prestando attenzione e aprendo la mente, il lettore è in grado di comprendere senza difficoltà ogni argomento trattato, che non si tratta solo di ‘Ghost Adventures’, ma di
interessanti approfondimenti sulle questioni più tecniche e spirituali del paranormale. Questo libro ti fa porre domande a cui nemmeno Zak stesso riesce - finora - a dare delle risposte, cosa che
non gli impedisce, tuttavia, di continuare la sua ricerca della verità. Non può essere altrimenti, visto che la sua mente lavora ininterrottamente e la sua connessione con gli spiriti è sempre
attiva anche nella vita di tutti i giorni; questo è ciò per cui lui vive, il suo scopo, la sua vocazione, il suo dono, ciò che lo sprona a continuare ad investigare ed esplorare il più possibile
la vita oltre la morte. Un mondo che esiste veramente anche se non è ancora facilissimo dargli una spiegazione concreta. Ma, d’altronde – come Zak stesso dice - il paranormale è una scienza a
parte che merita di essere riconosciuta e sviluppata al meglio, no?
L'OPINIONE DI GWEN
Appoggio e parafraso Francy nel dire che “I Am Haunted”, come “Dark World”, è una lettura intrigante e un pezzo unico per gli appassionati del paranormale, ma che è anche oltremodo più utile nel farci conoscere meglio l’uomo che li ha scritti entrambi. Un pensiero come quello di Zak è decisamente più comprensibile laddove ci venga spiegato a fondo Zak stesso. E se era questa la sua intenzione, direi che ci è riuscito. E’ chiaro il motivo per cui lui si sente spesso frainteso, ma è ciò che accade alle persone così creative, empatiche e speciali come lui. Persone che vedono un mondo diverso da quello normale, un mondo più profondo, ricco di costanti sfide, più straordinariamente interessante; tanto che i suoi misteri diventano allettanti in una maniera che pochi possono capire. Ma Zak non solo si cimenta nella scoperta dell’ignoto, lui ne fa una professione, un’arte, una scienza a tutti gli effetti. Ne è talmente ispirato che ispira a sua volta, non solo coloro che appartengono al suo stesso ambiente, ma chiunque. Chiunque abbia la forza, il coraggio, la volontà di perseguire un sogno, compiere una missione… senza però dimenticare, giustamente, di mettere il proprio dono e talento a disposizione del prossimo. Si scorrono le pagine di questa finestra socchiusa - non dico ‘aperta’ per un motivo specifico! - sul cuore di Zak senza accorgersi che si sta passando dal divertimento alla tristezza, dallo stupore alla rabbia nel corso di una manciata di righe. Il segreto del bravo narratore - e ho sempre pensato che lui lo fosse - è far dimenticare al lettore lo scorrere del tempo e contemporaneamente imprimergli nella testa i punti forti di ciò che si racconta. E Zak ci riesce eccome. E’ ovvio che consiglio questo libro, sia per i contenuti che per la narrazione, ma voglio inoltre avvertire quelli intenzionati a leggerlo in cerca di pecche su Zak, che troveranno di sicuro pane per il loro denti… ma fate attenzione, perché il pane in questione i denti ve li spaccherà tutti.
